To be eligible for an account with the Minnesota Secure Choice Program, an employee must be at least 18 years old and earning W-2 income in the State of Minnesota. This applies to full-time, part-time, and temporary workers. Additionally, eligibility is based upon an employee's State of employment rather than their State of residence. Therefore, if an employee lives in a different State, but earns their wages in and pays income taxes for Minnesota, they will still be eligible for an account with the Minnesota Secure Choice Program assuming they meet the other eligibility criteria outlined by state law.
Minnesota State law requires that all eligible employees be enrolled with the Program if they have worked (or are expected to work) 180 days of the year. An employee may be added as soon as their hire date if that is administratively easier for the employer, or if they express interest in participating in the program.
